USAID:TBCARE II / I’M YOUR BUDDY

I’m Your Buddy / Multiple Drug Resistant -TB Awareness & Information Campaign.

International Aid organization USAID through their South African implementation partner the URC commissioned Fixer to execute the development and roll out of a Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB) awareness campaign across pediatric hospital wards nationally. The campaign utilized a medley of mediums and interactive communication tools to support child patients, health care workers and parents through the treatment journey.

The multi-platform campaign was anchored by the co-created, child friendly, companion character, Buddy the Cat, who was created through a series of action media workshops with the child patients themselves. Buddy the Cat was developed with the primary aim of creating a companion for the child patients, a character to show solidarity, support and some cheer through their treatment journey.

The character was brought to life across the cross section of campaign communications tools, including, but not limited to: Edu Comics, Industrial Theatre, Plush Toys, Hospital Road Show, Animated Content, Merchandise and Interactive Mural Art.

MDR-TB Germs were turned into illustrations for kids to visualize their severity

We also produced a 15 minute documentary targeted at parents, this film unpacked the treatment process, the importance of adhering to the medication regime and communicated how best to support children through this process.

The  narrative was constructed by profiling a mother having successfully gone through the process with her daughter coupled with interviews from doctors, nurses, patients and TB experts.
